Blogs that live a story?

I’m participating in the KnowSchools course on blogging this week and so taking the time to read and comment on various blogs where I came across Lisa Read’s comment on blogging:

I’d used a blog in the past to tell a story, but this blog is more about living the story.

This is great food for thought. When is a blog telling a story and when is it living the story? What’s the difference? I’d love to hear other thoughts on this.

  1. I’d say the reader needs to know the context of the comment. As a statement on its own, I don’t see any difference. If the writer is writing a blog relating travel experiences while traveling, then that’s living the story and also telling the story. If the writer gives opinions about something, i.e. how effective our current political system is, then that’s telling a story, but not living it. It isn’t a very personal experience, though the subject does affect the writer.

  2. Wow….I’ve never been quoted before….does that mean I am now living in your story, or you in mine!?

I think it’s about immediacy. Given mobile technologies and just living at twitch speed, our blogs and “Facebook” type status reports offer an ALMOST running commentary– a voice over– of our lives. That’s how it feels to me, in any event….

    Thanks!

  3. I think that in my case it’s more about living the story. Telling a story implies that you know how it is going to end. So far my blog has been more about reflecting on the story I am currently engaged in.

  4. I like that idea of a blog being a voice over, or a commentary and reflection on the story we’re engaged in. A really good example I think is Dave Truss’ Remembrance day blog post “Two Wolves“. It really serves as both telling a story and living a story. He intertwines them beautifully.

  5. I loved that thought too. It’s so true. To me it also means that if you want to understand how blogging works, than you also have to blog it (to live it) . NAd specially if you want students to blog then you should also be blogging yourself. The in it not only about living the story, it is also about sharing the story and guiding others to do the same.
When we know what it is like to be in the learners’ shoes, we are always able to reach out to them better, differently, in a more meaningful way!
